A very hot day predicted (high 80s), so we started early (6:50 ish). Going counterclockwise (up to S Branch first then back via Pogy Notch trail) was a great idea. Pretty easy hiking no super steep areas, but got that done before noon heat. Nice views of Katahdin from the south peak (Black Cat). Decided to take Howe Brook trail up to just the first waterfall—a VERY GOOD IDEA. Beautiful swimming spot to remember. Can jump off rock into pool of water. Colder than the lake but so nice. Only super muddy section was the last bit of Pogy Notch trail. Would be nice on a super hot day to take a canoe across to the falls and back from the campsite.
