Transept Trail to Hiline out and back Sedona (3/30/22, 1:20:10PM)
This is an out and back hike to an overlook just beyond the intersection of the Transept Trail with the Hiline Trail. Views of Cathedral Rock from the south and southeast against a backdrop of distant cliffs, mesas, and mountains become more intimate as the hike proceeds to the intersection with the Hiline. The saddle-like viewpoint is about .1 mile to the right up the Hiline Trail. Persisting to this viewpoint is worth the effort, as it offers magnificent views in almost every direction from different places on the saddle.
The Transept Trail begins with a steady, moderate ascent with the Village of Oak Creek close by to your right. After the first mile, most of the trail contours with gentle ups and downs next to impressive red rock cliffs and formations to your right as you head toward the Hiline Trail.
The small Transept trailhead is on the left (SW) side of Verde Valley School Rd. just after you leave the developed housing area of Oak Creek Village. It is unmarked on many trail maps of the Sedona area, although it is clear on the Gaia Topo. For a hike in the Cathedral Rock area, we saw few people once we got away from the immediate Oak Creek vicinity even at a popular time of year (late March).
