This 17 mile trail is a steep, narrow dirt road from Bodfish California to high into the Sierra in the Sequoia NF South of lake Isabella. The road starts at 3700 feet, and rapidly ascends to nearly 8200 feet. The first six miles are steep, narrow and rocky with multiple switchbacks. there are not too many places to pass. I was pulling an expedition trailer and had no problems. Once at altitude, the road improves and slowly descends. There is not much dispersed camping until you get above 7000 feet on the route. I did check out two primitive camps, Cold Springs Camp (15 miles) and Piute Mountain Camp (17 miles). There were pit toilets at the Piute Mountain Camp. When you get to Piute Mountain Rd. at the end of the trail, to the right is a steep descent to Walker Basin and Caliente, and to the left takes to you Kelso Valley.
