Silver couloir
Previous Weather - Very Warm, hasn't been below freezing at night for a few days. Certainly flirting around freezing temps, but not cold, think 34-36 degrees at night. Warm in the day 50/60 degrees up top.
715am - car departure
By 1010am the sun was hitting at least some part of every section of the couloir - ideal descent 1015-1030?
---------REPORT----------
We certainly left too early for this run. We left the car at 715 am from the Y in the road. Relatively short trip from the car. Summit around 8:30 am and then waited for about 15 minutes or so before the descent. This was not enough time! By 830 only the very top of the couloir and the base had sun on it. I dropped in from the tricky start and fell, self arrested about 20-30 feet down, loosing both skis. Had to down climb another 30 or so feet to get one ski. Tough entrance. The entire run was icy, until about halfway down, we were able to ski skiers left and get some soft lines.
Time frame - If we attempt next week I would say that summiting by 9/930 would be best. This would allow us to not have a shitty climb post holing. I would then say 1015 would be the prime time to ski down. Again, around 10:10am, the entire run had as least some sun exposure.
-----------Observations----------
Post holing from the base of the snow field up into the couloir. Once inside and out of the direct sunlight it went back to hard surface. For sure need crampons. Was not as steep at Alta 2, until the last 20 feet and then it was steeper. Signs of recent (assuming) afternoon avalanches in the area. Felt relatively safe, lower part was a lot of post holing, but once out of direct sunlight conditions changed drastically. YOU NEED the sun for this run. Kinda sketch when icy!
