Jozivanini Camp to Josh’s pan waterhole west of the camp by bike with guide. This is the most remote tent camp in Hwange NP, per guide even in Africa. It is the only camp with a NP bike license (when safe). This was a dicy trip. Only 7km, but progress on bike is slow and during the beginning dry season riding in the inter-dune Mopane trees was hard as you constantly had to watch for elephants which were abundant and not used to humans / bikes here at all. The sand makes it harder and elephant dunk everywhere which can puncture the tires due to the i digested thorns in it (avoid driving over it). We had to abandon the bikes several times and walk around herds for them not to smell us and later come reclaim the bikes. It made for some close and dangerous encounters, but our guide was armed and experienced (retired park ranger game warden) and gave enough confidence. The situation at the waterhole was similar while having brunch. Arriving herds would come challenge us at the hole and got mighty close despite us making noise - we had to sprint and hide behind the vehicle couple of times. On way back we did not use the bikes but put them up on game drive keep as not safe to go through the mopane forest anymore. Interesting but not necessarily safest trip. Certainly an adventure.
