The Wallow Fire of 2011 has taken much of the beauty away. We chose to do this trail in the fall, and the Aspen yellow foliage made the hike! The leaves literally made a “yellow brick road” on the trail. There are several runs of rocky terrain. But mostly smooth dirt trails. It’s a great distance (3.5 miles one way) to do this hike in an afternoon or morning.

Some very rough sections but a great place to see animals we saw big horn sheep, wild horses, antelope, hawks. Oh and a great view at the end if you are willing to hike to the cliff.

A beautiful and fairly easy walk along the creek. Good for dogs and kids depending on how far you go. Water could be swift for small kids.

A relatively easy 5 mile round trip. Nice trail through pine and aspen forest. One large burned meadow to cross with a wonderful aspen forest rising up. Long switchbacks down to the Black River. Beautiful area to sit and relax a bit. Hiking out may seem daunting, but very doable.

Pole knoll is a really great place to have a “choose your own adventure” hike with lots of connectors you can assemble to make a full range of distances and terrains. Lots of good shade on the interior trails for hot days.

Not a hike, but an off-road trail. Must be a hunting trail. My 4runner with a mild level lift and decent Nitto Trail Grappler tires did great. Anything wider would have gotten some scratches and likely banged up rims from logs or rocks. Encountered a little bit of snow and ice in the shady parts. Would absolutely drive this trail again.

The best of the best. Absolutely beautiful, stunning scenery, good trail footing, lots of shade on the connector portion through a very dense forest, great lunch area at Gabaldon.

Unfortunately my favorite trail Viewpoint had a downed log making it impassible for 7 horses but the weather, good friends and our trusty horses as well as the beautiful surroundings made for a great day!

During the right time of year this would be a great hike. We did it opening day this spring and it was very muddy and we there were many trees that had fallen across the trail from the winter. It needs a little maintenance at the beginning of the season but it is beautiful along the creek.
