Plenty of company on the trail, most hiking Savage River to Mountain Vista (which I recommend for anyone with knee issues). Saw pikas early on in the jumbled rocks of the steep pitch, then arctic ground squirrels later. Golden-crowned sparrows, magpies, ruby-crowned kinglets, dark-eyed juncos. No large critters. The trail was dry and dusty throughout, no rain in the previous several days, temperate in the mid-60s to start, mid-70s or higher at the finish.

Easy, quick, relatively flat, trails very well maintained, trail stairs were excellent height for 70-yr old.

Great hike in Denali to see the Alaska range with a lot of Marmot and moose. Vistas when the skies clear go a long way.

Lots of heavy brush, several river crossings and scree. Be sure to come back down toward Tattler Creek as we found out the after the fact that the back side of the mountain is a restricted wildlife area.

Quick little out and back up the savage river valley as it becomes a canyon to the north. Pretty heavy traffic.

What a beautiful hike and a real Denali gem. It’s accessible via the visitor center and is difficult only in the distance traveled which out and back was 18 miles. We split our group in two and swapped the car key mid way. The quiet surreal wilderness of the ridge line was stunning but the real winner was the lush tundra, alpine vegetation; the lichens, worts, fungi, mosses and berries. Saw no animals but plenty of sign. The lakes were beautiful but plan lunch on the ridge line. You’ll know you’re in Denali wilderness.
