This is a popular trailhead that accesses the Desolation Wilderness in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The trailhead is the starting point for two main trails. One trail goes to Granite Lake and beyond. The other trail skirts the ridge and leads to Cascade Falls and Cascade canyon.
The trailhead is located at the back of the Bayview Campground, on Highway 89, at the foot of Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe. There is a stock corral and a kiosk for day-use permits located at the trailhead.
Parking is limited to just a handful of spaces at the trailhead but there are many spots available on the shoulder of the highway at the entrance to the campground. If it's a busy day, park on the shoulder of the highway and walk through the small, primitive campground to get to the trailhead.
Dogs are allowed but should be on a leash or under voice control.
There is no water at the campground or trailhead. Pit toilets can be found in the campground.
