The base of Larrun (La Rhune) is only about a 40 minute drive from Biarritz, in a town called Sare. Larrun has lush vegetation, wild horses, streams that look like they're from a story book and views of the ocean and mountains. This is Basque Country at its best.
When leaving Saint Jean de Luz on the coast-to-coast Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne (HRP) walking route; Larrun is the first peak you come across. The summit at 901m (2956 ft) is on the border of Spain and France. For those less inclined to do the 2 to 3 hour hike up the mountain there is a beautiful train that leaves from Sare several times a day, you can even go round-trip. The train was first opened in 1924 and has been maintained impeccably. Take a break at the summit where there are some restaurants, gift shops, and a view like no other.
Their site can be viewed in English, French, Spanish or Basque;
