An alternative route to Mount Loch with far more elevation and mostly on trail (rather than service track). Start and finish at the top of the Eidelweiss track on the Great Alpine Road. Can enjoy an ice bath in Swindlers Creek on the return.

A hardcore day hike for the serious walker only. This hike enables you to climb the spectacular and punishing Diamantina Spur from Mt Hotham. This hike circumnavigates the entire catchment of the Diamantina River. Best done in mild weather as the heat and wind along exposed sections of Machinery spur and the Razorback can be fierce. On hot days to prevent having to carry huge amounts of water; bladders and bottles can be refilled from the Diamantina River before ascending the spur (very reliable clean water).
Start the hike at the Mt Hotham summit car park (near the sign for the highest point of the road) and proceed in a counter-clockwise direction from loch car park. The point of this hike is to ascend Diamantina spur so do not do in reverse (descending the spur is not enjoyable or recommended)! Allow 7-10 hours.
