Devils Postpile
Overview
This is a moderate one way trail in Devils Post pile National Monument taking you by the beautiful Devils Post Pile and Rainbow falls. You will hike next to the San Joaquin river a points while enjoying the smell of pine in the air. You can hike a mile further to see the lower Rainbow falls and add a little extra mileage to your hike.
Getting Started
To access the trail head, use the Devil's Post Pile road at Mammoth Mountain. The road is closed in October for the winter and the road opening in summer will vary due to snow pack or road conditions. A shuttle will be necessary to enter the Devil's Post Pile National Monument. Fee is required to enter monument area, visit nps.gov for more information on fees and shuttle.. Get off at Devils post pile/Rainbow falls trail head. It is a moderate 2 mile hike that will take you by Devils Post pile, you can take the loop that will allow you to see the top of the post pile and will bring you back to the main trail. Continue on the main trail, you will descend toward the falls, stay on the trail as the edge near the falls could give way and cause a fall risk. There are several areas for you to take pictures and enjoy the falls. Continue down the trail for a longer hike toward lower Rainbow falls.
Taking Children
I recommend this trail for children 10 years and older who could handle a four or six mile round trip hike if you decide to hike to the lower falls.
