Overview

This is a moderate to difficult loop trail to North Falls Viewpoint in Silver Falls State Park.

This trail goes by South Falls, Lower South Falls, Lower North Falls, Double Falls, Drake Falls, Middle North Falls, Twin Falls, North Falls, and Winter Falls.

In the winter months and during higher flow, many unnamed falls can also be seen along the trail. The trails may also become muddy and/or partially flooded- it is important to bring rain gear and shoes with good traction.

This is a very popular trail that is nearly always crowded, even on rainy days. Please note that dogs are not allowed on the Canyon Trail and are only permitted on the Rim Trail with a leash. Trails are clearly marked with appropriate signage.

Getting Started

Park in the South Falls day use area. Either an Oregon State Parks pass or a $5 day pass is required for each vehicle. Day passes are available from an electronic kiosk (accepts cash or cards) near the restrooms. Simple printed maps are free at this kiosk. Parking lots are typically very crowded, but lots of parking spots exist at the site.

Taking Children

Many hikes in this park are child friendly. Most of the trails lack steep elevation gain though there are several sets of stairs to climb during the hike. Keep an eye on children around slippery area's near waterfall side trails. If length is an issue, a shorter loop may be done via the Winter Falls cutoff.

One of the most beautiful parks in Oregon. Sitting behind a waterfall is easily one of my favorite activities.

A moderate hike with beautiful scenery. Very crowded - make sure you bring a mask and wear it over your mouth and nose when you are near people on trail, as most places are not wide enough for social distancing. I’m guessing that people using Gaia don’t need to be told, but bring a headlamp if there is any chance you’ll be out late. I’ve seen people miles off course after dark, trying to navigate with cellphone flashlights.

Beautiful waterfall hike within a state park. I would not label this difficult. It is moderate at best.

We hiked this June 6,2020 at 8:00 am from the North Trailhead parking lot. It took us about 4.5 hours and we saw a few folks on the trail, but not many. I am extremely tired and sore today and did find the hike to be moderately challenging. It is a beautiful walk through the forest as well as above and below, behind and in front of some very spectacular waterfalls. It’s wet, slippery, and some mud in several places, but got the most part it was a well groomed hard packed dirt trail. There’s a section with 80+ stairs! The trail signs are hard to read snd confusing to follow snd/or are not within your line of sight when heading in a particular direction. It Oregon rain-misted during all but one hour of the hike.

We did the big loop on May 10 from the parking lot to North Falls, then back along the trail to South Falls and back to the car. Gaia said 8 miles for this. It was a marvelous day, in the low 80s up top, a bit cooler down below. This is one of our favorite hikes and we do it every year. Trails were unseasonable dry, with just a few puddles to navigate. We hiked counter-clockwise for the first time and it was reinforced why the clockwise circuit is more popular: better views of most falls and the signage is targeted for clockwise travel. Pickup a free map at the kiosk in the parking lot if you aren't familiar with the trails. Tennis shoes work fine, but we like a little more solid footing with light boots. This trail can be very busy on weekends, so we always go during the week if we can. It is a keeper and fills up your waterfall bucket for awhile. Newcomers and new hikers should be aware that there are several shorter loops available.

November 30th 45• f drizzling rain with more towards the end created for me a misty moody walk in this meandering canyon walk to these 10 falls some you walked towards then get swallowed as you walked under and behind the falls. The river and falls were pumping with energy and sound while the lush green moss covered forest spoke to me of primeval spirits. Marvelous day mellow walking and a hot chocolate at the south fork cafe lodge warming ourselves from the rain and cooler dusk.
