Standing Indian Mountain Loop via Appalachian Trail
Overview
This is a classic route for a challenging backpack, which follows the Appalachian Trail (AT) for most of the route.
From the trailhead at Standing Indian Campground the trail climbs somewhat steeply until it meets the AT at about the 2 mile point. It is about 1 more mile to reach the Long Branch Shelter. This hike passes a number of typical AT shelters, and it is quite likely you will be sharing camping and cookware space with fellow hikers, depending on the weather and season. Information about the shelters can be found from the usual AT resources, including white blaze.net and FarOut.
Some highlights to look for on this hike include the firetower at Albert Mountain, and amazing views at Standing Indian Mountain.
This trail goes by Backcountry Info. Center, Glassmine Gap, Pinnacle Mountain, Big Spring, Albert Mountain, Little Ridgepole Mountain, Beech Gap, Standing Indian, Deep Gap, Kimsey Creek Group Camp Sites B & C, Kimsey Creek Group Camp Site A, and GuidePost.
