Overview

This is a difficult out and back trail to [Brushy Mountain] summit (/hike/poi/united-states/tennessee/great-smoky-mountains-national-park/brushy-mountain/) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This trail goes by Trillium Gap.
When connecting with the Trillium Gap Trail to ascend Mt Leconte the total 1-way distance is 9.1 miles.

The trailhead is somewhat remote, but this trail has nowhere near the crowds that frequent the other trails to Mt Leconte. There are nice views from Brushy Mtn, often even when Mt Leconte is covered in clouds.

Getting Started

Use gravel parking lot at Porters Creek TH.

Taking Children

There are no risky or hazardous areas, but this would be a difficult hike for young children.

We did this trail in June as part of climb to Leconte and descent on Alum Cave with a shuttle. The trail itself was fairly well-graded and in good condition. There were many blowdowns and overgrown vegetation that need attention.

Brushy Mountain & Porter Creek Log Bridge
Nice blue-sky cool day for solo OAB to finally bag Brushy Mtn summit after passing up several times to LeConte. Surprise was a view, un like Silers Bald. Don't do this route if rain in past week. Added segment of Porters Creek trail to make sure bridge still intact for next months trip.
