Yocum Ridge Trail #771
Overview
This is a difficult out-and-back or partial loop hike with plenty of interesting terrains; Sandy River, Ramona Falls, and a view of Mt Hood and its glaciers.
Start the hike on the Sandy River Trail, at the SE corner of the parking lot. At ~1.1 miles the trail crosses the Sandy River. There is no bridge and the river may be swift and dangerous. Scout here or upstream for a crossing log or a safe location to ford. US Forest Service River Crossing Guide
After the crossing, go south on the Pacific Crest Trail or north on the PCT and then turn southeast on the Ramona Falls Trail. Both options go to Ramona Falls. Ramona Falls gets very busy, so get your photos early.
From Ramona Falls take the Timberline Trail north ~0.7 miles to the Yocum Ridge trail. Hike up, up, up through the forest, then meadows and rock until the trail ends at a flattish spot on Yocum Ridge, below Reid and Sandy Glaciers. Enjoy the spectacular views and return down the same trail or take the alternate route between Ramona Falls and the Sandy River. The Ramona Falls trail is well-shaded and might be your best option for the afternoon return.
