Overview

This is a moderate to difficult loop trail to Spencer Butte in Spencer Butte Park. It is rated as such due to the steep elevation gain, especially when summiting the Butte. There are beautiful views from the top, especially at sunrise and sunset. The summit requires ascent of a series of stone steps which become slippery in the rain and ice.

Getting Started

There are many ways to approach this trail. One may start from the Ridgeline Trail, the lower parking lot, or the upper parking lot. From the upper parking lot, there are two trails to the top: one is a shorter, steep switchback trail; the other is a more gradual longer trail. There is a clear map at the parking lot indicating the two routes from the upper parking area. The trails may be slippery when it's raining, so plan accordingly. It is often cold and windy at the top of the Butte.

Taking Children

Children who are capable of walking up steep hills and scrambling up stairs will enjoy this hike.
