Kalalau Camping via Kalalau Trail
Overview
This is a difficult one way trail to Kalalau Beach in Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park. Camping permits are required and can be applied via website at https://camping.ehawaii.gov/camping/all,details,1692.html
The hike is over 1,000’ elevation gain and loss and crosses five different streams which can be treacherous depending on how much it has recently rained with the possibility of high water levels. Take extra precautions when crossing the rivers.
After crossing the second river, Hanakoa, be prepared for a steep ascent. As soon as you encounter an ocean view again, you’ll begin the scariest part of the hike famously nicknamed Crawler’s Ledge. Once you survived trekking on the narrow path on the sheer cliffs, the views get more enjoyable.
The Kalalau Campground is along a gorgeous beach and the valley hikes cross many ancient rock terraces. Enjoy the solitude, seabirds, and waterfalls.
