Turtlehead Mountain via Calico Tanks Trail
Overview
This is a difficult out and back trail to Turtlehead Mountain in La Madre Mountain Wilderness Area.
From the Sandstone Quarry parking lot, start on the well distinguished gravel trail. This trail will then split into the Turtlehead Peak trail (left) and the Calico Tanks trail (right), continue on the Turtlehead Peak trail. The trail is marked by the BLM for a short distance and is easy to follow with limited markings after 1 mile. Once the trail begins to steepen, and is more difficult to follow, it is marked by amateur white, red, and green blazes and arrows. Follow the white blazes to the summit (green can also be followed near the summit) for sweeping views of the Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, and Mt Charleston. Descend via the same route.
Getting Started
Access Red Rock Canyon via the scenic drive ($15 access, or free with state or national park pass). Follow the road to Sand Quarry lot and park there.
Taking Children
The trail is steep in areas, with loose gravel and slippery rock if wet or icy. Bring extra water and wind proof clothing as it can be very windy at the top. 4/10 for young children. About 2,000 feet of gain
