Overview
This is a moderate hike trail to Alum Cave in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail travels through varied scenery along streams and through a passage under Arch Rock.
Getting Started
From Gatlinburg, TN follow US 441 to the well-signed Alum Cave parking area. There are two lots and the trail leaves from the upper, southernmost lot. As this is one of the most popular hikes in the Park, arrive early to get a parking spot.
Taking Children
This is an excellent hike for older children. They will enjoy hiking through Arch Rock and the overhanging Alum Cave.

★★★★★
4.5 star. 3 hikes: easy to the arch, which was worth seeing - even for the least physically active, medium hike to the bluff/overlook before the cave - worthwhile views for the average hiker, and a short hammy/glute burner to the “cave” from there - great views and worth the sweat for the average hiker. Note: 3rd day of 30k+ steps & elevation made this feel even more worthwhile.
