Ontario Peak
Overview
This is a easy one way trail to Ontario Peak in Cucamonga Wilderness.
This trail goes by Bighorn Peak.
This hike assumes one is already at Icehouse Saddle, which must be reached from one of 4 other trails. The trail itself is rather easy and pleasant. It does not have a great deal of elevation gain in any one spot, though there is a ridge climb from Kelly Camp (old forestry camp, now a primitive campground with no facilities) that can be challenging if you are tired from the previous climbs.
Very rarely, there is water running in the spring at Kelly Camp, but after June it is typically dry until winter. There are Bighorn Sheep that live on the steep mountain sides in the area. The views from Ontario Peak are of the LA Basin to the south, and Mount San Antonio to the northwest. Other peaks are visible from Ontario.
The trail is relatively well maintained, but there is one spot in the juniper that you need to remember on your return, or you may wind up at a sub-peak wondering how to continue. Be mindful of the path through the juniper.
Getting Started
The most straightforward way to get to this trail is to hike Icehouse Canyon to Icehouse Saddle, then take the first right at that hub junction.
Taking Children
This would be ill-advised for a child 8 or under due to the exposure and length of the hike combined with whatever previous hike was taken to get to Icehouse Saddle.
