La Jolla Valley Camps via Chumash and La Jolla Valley Loop Trails
Overview
This is a difficult loop trail that starts at sea level with the Chumash trail with a steep climb to the relatively flat La Jolla Loop trail to La Jolla Valley Trail Walk-in Camp and returning through the 1248 foot Mugu Peak. This is in Point Mugu State Park in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
Getting Started
There is a dirt parking lot at the bottom of the Chumash trail. However this parking lot does get full. There are no parking sides on both sides of the road. However on the northbound side a little to the south of the parking lot there is legal street parking.
From the parking lot is a steep trail. It's not dangerous but is strenuous. Once you get to the valley it is relatively flat and there are numerous trail options. The trail to the to the camp is mostly flat. The return goes over Mugu Peak. The trail goes over the peak and west. This path is very steep and slippery. Hiking poles are recommended. There are other options that go around the peak but are longer.
There is no bathroom, water or facilities on the trail.
This is a popular hike although most people are just going to Mugu Peak.
The weather going up and over the ridge can be quite windy, therefore a range of clothing is recommended.
Dogs are not allowed.
