Rice Creek Swamp
Overview
Be aware of alligators on this hike
This is a moderate one way trail in Rice Creek Conservation Area. Just three miles west of Palatka, the Conservation Area is incredibly peaceful and sees few visitors. The hike involves a section of the Florida Trail (Florida's only National Scenic Trail). There are several trails in the area, so one could add a few extra miles of loops to the hike to make this a long day hike or even an overnight backpack.
This trail goes by Large Cypress Tree and Rice Creek Swamp.
If backpacking, there is a shelter known as the "Rice Creek Hilton" on the trail. There is non-potable water available at the shelter via pump.
Getting Started
Remember the 10 Essentials (https://www.nps.gov/articles/10essentials.htm) and to Leave No Trace (https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/).
Park at the Rice Creek Trailhead (29.682369, -81.736847) and follow signs through a field of previously burned trees until you reach the edge of the dense forest. There are signs and maps indicating directions at various points. This could be done as a loop or with spurs added on.
There is no parking fee, but no trash or restroom at the trailhead.
Taking Children
This would not be a great hike for young children as there are alligators next to the trail. Older children would enjoy this hike.
