I love this hike. I do it at least once whenever I visit. DO NOT start at the top. What an expensive and miserable and knee-busting waste of time. Start at the Granite Canyon trailhead and hike up ... get some exercise that's totally gentle on your body (very little downhill along the route), and pass through every ecosystem from the sage flats in the valley through low forests and creeks, to the high forests, to the high mountain meadows (breathtaking when the flowers are doing their thing), to the tundra up high. Then get a free ride down on the tram—from summit to the nearest milkshake is about 12 minutes. Only downside is that your day will end with crowds, and a rather ugly summit littered with ski resort apparatus. But the view is still nice, the breeze is well-earned, and the ride down is super-deluxe.
