Ruby Dome via Hennen Canyon
Overview
This difficult out-and-back trail ascends Hennen Canyon past Griswold Lake on its way to the summit of Ruby Dome in Humboldt National Forest. At 11,247 feet, Ruby Dome is the tallest peak in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada.
The first 3 miles winds through the beautiful, yet steep Hennen Canyon until reaching Griswold Lake, a nice spot for a snack before a severe climb to the base of the peak. About 4 miles in, the hiker can choose between two routes to reach the ridge – a more direct line which follows a gully up, or a more indirect route which climbs and traverses granite slabs. Both options include exposure and loose rock. Once on the west ridge, boulder-hop until you reach the summit. From the top, expansive views of the surrounding peaks and wide valleys come into view. Retrace your steps on the way down.
Getting Started
The trailhead is located about 22 miles from Elko and Interstate 80, past the community of Spring Creek. To access the trailhead, you must first contact the Spring Creek Homeowners Association at (775) 753-6295 prior to your arrival date to obtain a key to access the gated road. This costs $10 per person per day. Otherwise, be prepared to add roughly one mile each direction by beginning at the gate. There is a bathroom and picnic benches at the trailhead.
Taking Children
Extreme caution is advised for taking children. This route involves loose rock, scrambling, and exposure, especially near the last mile. The sheer elevation gain (almost 5,000 feet) is another factor to consider when bringing children, or anybody who isn’t accustomed to strenuous, alpine hiking, on this hike.
