The route on this map is Forest Rd 181. I'm not aware of a Forest Road (FR) 354 or trail 354 anywhere near Henderson Flat. While it could be hiked, it is better described as a 2-track road and this route more suitable for 4x4/Off-Road recreation. This road as shown here on Gaia as "Henderson Tank via FR 354" terminates at the Sycamore Wilderness Boundary and Forest Trail 63 and Forest Trail 53 trailhead.

Getting Started

This trail (see above overview: better described as a 4x4/Off-road trail or recreation opportunity), Forest Rd 181 starts on the west side of Yavapai County Rd 71, about 2.5-3.0 miles north of the Verde River. It is an easy to moderate 4-wheel drive road. Not recommended for street/passenger vehicles. High clearance is needed and some weather conditions and dry terrain may require engaging 4-wheel drive. The road has some significant scouring and erosion from the 2021 monsoon rains following the Rafael Fire. As of March 2022, the road is still easily passable in a 4-wheel drive vehicle with little to moderate clearance. The road is still easily identifiable and vertical road signs (181) are in place and easily seen at key intersections.

Taking Children

This would be a long hike (13.0 miles one way) from the start of FR 181 to its end. There is no pick-up spot at the end as this road terminates at the Sycamore Wilderness Boundary. Therefore, a hike would be 26 miles at a minimum to hike out or longer to incorporate as a loop or connection to other trails. Some sections have been denuded of juniper and pinyon trees from the 2021 Rafael Fire, so there is no shade where there used to be little shade. In summer months, temperatures could reach well into the 90s at this elevation. In the winter, freezing or below freezing temps are possible as is snow. As for a 4-wheel/off-road recreation opportunity, it is very suitable for children/families in vehicles in good working order. Of course, helmets are a must for children for any UTV/ATV/motorcycle on this route. Otherwise, safety belts are a must for 4-wheel drive vehicles.
