I chose this trail for a first backpacking trip. It ended up being more about 20miles long. This hike is amazing, there’s many scenic views and nice camping spots along the way. Some things that should emphasized, firstly is the water can get scarce towards the last stretch of the hike on the pinhoti trail if you started with the sky bridge route like we did. Secondly the difficultly of the trail my friends and I definitely bit off more than we could chew for a first backpacking trip over the weekend. 20miles and inclines of over a 1000 feet in one mile. If you’re backpacking for the first time I’d consider something shorter and less steep.

My first 20-miler (approximately) and it was worth it. Did it in March. Went anti-clockwise, on the Pinhoti -> Chinnabee -> Skyway route. The Pinhoti is the toughest of the 3 in terms of elevation. At some point around 4 miles, there will be a lot of rocks. Make sure to follow the blue stickers on trees as it is a bit easy to get lost there. There’s a beautiful back country campsite on top of the Pinhoti for overnight options.
I did this over 2 days, stopping at the Chinnabee shelter which is approximately at the 9 mile mark, right next to the Cheaha river/creek. The Chinnabee trail is beautiful, filled with creeks and some falls. The last leg of Skyway is probably the more bland part of the hike. Did not encounter any wild animals, except for one wild turkey.

If you don't do the Pinhoti portion, leave a car at the Adams gap trailhead or roadwalk back to Turnipseed
