Overview

This is a moderate loop trail to ʻŌʻilipuʻu in Haleakalā National Park.

This hike treks through a variety of ecosystems and landscapes through the Wilderness Area at Haleakala National Park on Maui Island in Hawaii. From dry desert terrain dotted with towering cinder cones to cloud forests alive with colorful flora and fauna, this place is unlike any other on earth.
Look for the rare silverswords flowering.

This hike is completely exposed. Have plenty of water, snacks, foul weather gear, and lights if you begin after noon. Only flushing toilets are at the trailhead of Keone He'ehe'e. Once you descend down into the crater you won't want to leave. There are 3 different cabins at 3 different locations and 2 backpacking campsites to reserve. Please do your part by picking up garbage and using WAG bags if you need to go.

Getting Started

After paying at the fee station near the entrance to the park, continue to the summit parking lot. The trailhead begins there.

Epic hike! If going from and back to the visitor centre, plan on 2 hours to get to the volcano floor and 3-4 hours to get back to the visitor centre plus time on the volcano floor. We went to the Kapalaoa cabin for lunch and outhouse break the looped near the Paliku cabin before hike back around the cones. Took 10 hours total, in time to watch the sunset. Bring good hiking boots, water, sunscreen and rain gear.
