Lyle Cherry Orchard Trail
Overview
This is a scenic double loop hike near Lyle Peak in Lyle Cherry Orchard, a Friends of the Columbia River Gorge property in the Columbia River gorge. The route consists of the Lyle loop on the west and Cherry loop on the east, connected as a double lollipop or "dumbbell" shape. The trail is popular in the spring for the wildflowers but also has a lot of poison oak. It is also lovely in fall, with the brown, long grass and oak trees.
From the trailhead, the trail follows switchbacks in a gully to rise onto the plateau. Along the way, there are paths leading to lookout points, but the main trail is obvious. Arriving at a junction, heading west to hike the Lyle loop clockwise. The Lyle loop overlooks the town of Lyle with stunning views of the gorge. Heading east from the junction, arrive at another junction for completing the Lyle loop counterclockwise or continue on to the Cherry loop (you'll also arrive at this second junction if taking the Lyle loop clockwise). The Cherry loop is smaller, also with great views, and passes a couple of remaining old Cherry trees on the southeast side of the loop.
Getting Started
For the Lyle Cherry Orchard Trailhead drive east from Lyle along Washington SR 14. A large gravel parking pullout is on the left (north) side of the highway just past the second tunnel. There is no trailhead sign, but the trail starts near the middle of the parking area. There is a sign a short way up, where the trail intersects the Lyle Convict Road. Note that the sign is outdated and does not include the newer Lyle loop.
Taking Children
Good for children, if they can stay out of the poison oak.
