Red Hill Cabin via Mauna Loa Trail
Overview
This is a difficult out and back trail in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
This hike has two backcountry sites. The first is at 10,000’ and the second is at 13,250’. Both sites have a cabin, pit toilets, and water catchment tanks. Check with backcountry office to confirm the water levels. Make sure to bring warm weather gear. Temperatures may drop below freezing even in the summertime.
The majority of this hike is above the tree line so the draw is the unique lava formations and the incredible views. Be prepared for technical hiking. Lava is sharp and unforgiving.
Getting Started
