Overview

This beautiful hike that features several waterfalls following winter rains. The route is most popular on weekends from about January through March when group hikes are common. At peak times, stream crossings can be wet. After rainfall, the lower roads in Donner Canyon can be very muddy, but higher up the soils drain better. Spring brings an abundance of wildflowers. In the off season, the flow in the creeks and falls is greatly reduced. Look for the Donner Cabin site off of Donner Canyon Road. There are no facilities on this hike, so bring sufficient water. No dogs are allowed in the State Park.

Getting Started

As of May, 2020, the State Park is open for hiking. The City of Clayton has imposed new parking restrictions on Regency Drive, so allow extra time to look for a legal location to park in the area. The Mitchell Canyon parking lot is closed at this time. Parking outside the gate at Mitchell Canyon or on restricted streets in Clayton will result in ticketing.

Taking Children

The first mile is flat and suitable for children of all ages. After this, the road becomes steep. The Falls trail is slippery and steep in places. There are several stream crossings. The trail features includes drop offs in several locations.
