Pass Mountain Loop
Overview
This is a moderate to difficult loop trail to Pass Mountain in Tonto National Forest.
This trail goes by Merkle Hills and North Cat Peak.
Due to many twists and turns on the trail the distance is closer to 10 miles long for the complete loop.
Most people do this hike in a clockwise direction.
There is gradual elevation increase as you head north from the parking area. There is a viewpoint that will give you amazing sights of the Salt River Valley as the river flows out of Saguaro Lake. A great location for sunrise/sunsets. The saddle on the eastern side of the mountain is the highest elevation of the trail. Another great viewpoint of the east valley, Goldfield and Superstition mountains.
Trail gets steep and narrow moving south from the saddle. Ledges 40' down, loose footing.
In late spring/early summer thousands of native succulents and flowers in this region will bloom making for some great pictures. A good monsoon season will encourage prolonged flowering.
Safety
This is a Desert Location. Make sure to bring plenty of water. There are many species of cactus, snakes and lizards. If you do come across any creepy crawlies allowing them time and space will encourage them to move along out of the path. Temperatures can reach upwards of 115 degrees during the August/September. Check local weather and prepare accordingly. Please follow the leave no trace principles.

Taking Children
The entire loops is a long distance, and there are numerous obstacles including sharp loose rocks, and steep ledges with minimal trail width. See safety notes above.
The western half of the trail is easy going with gradual elevation changes and some washes to cross. You should be fine with most children while hiking at their pace.
From the saddle on the eastern side going to the south is very rough terrain, with steep drop offs I only recommend children who are used to these types of hikes and terrain.
As always, use your best judgement with your children. You know their experience and limits better than anyone else.
