Hopkins Prairie Campground via Florida Trail
Overview
This is a moderate one way trail to or from Hopkins Prairie Campground in Juniper Prairie Wilderness.
It is generally used for backpacking or hiking. There are several campgrounds in the area, but they fill up quickly, so be sure to make a reservation or arrive early.
Getting Started
Remember the 10 Essentials (https://www.nps.gov/articles/10essentials.htm) and to Leave No Trace (https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/).
Start from either Juniper Springs (parking fee is required) or Hopkins Prairie Campground and hike on the Florida Trail (Florida's only National Scenic Trail). Be aware of the abundant wildlife in the area, including birds, reptiles (snakes, lizards, and potentially alligators), small mammals (like rabbits, chipmunks, and squirrels), and bigger mammals (such as bears, the Florida panther, fox, or bobcats). If you are backpacking, be sure to bring a bear canister or be prepared to hang any items with a scent (including but not limited to chapstick, soap, lotions, sunscreen, and food).
There are scattered trees along the route, but be prepared to be in the sun for most of the hike. Water can be filtered at Hidden Pond.
Taking Children
This is not a great hike for children due to the length. There are a lot of venomous snakes and other hazards around the area.
