Marcos de Niza Trail and National Trail Loop
Overview
This is a moderate loop trail in South Mountain Preserve.
Nice views of Tempe, downtown and surrounding mountains. Absolutely no shade. Some elevation gain, about 400 feet.
While moderate, you can continue on many other trails for a more strenuous hike.
Also, while moderate it's not the best for dogs due to scrambling on the west end. The scramble requires use of hands. Scramble could be avoided by hiking out and back instead of the loop.
Can be crowded especially on weekend mornings.
Historic note:
The name "Marcos de Niza" is carved into a rock near the beginning of the trail, enclosed by metal bars. According to the story behind this inscription, the individual who once owned the land believed that its value would increase if it had a historical signature. The name was carved to suggest that Friar de Niza had passed through with a Spanish exploration party in 1539.
There are some authentic Native American petroglyphs nearby the trailhead.
