Hyalite Lake via National Forest Development Road 427 Trail
Overview
This is a moderate one way trail to Hyalite Lake in Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area.
This is considered one of the Bozeman area's premiere hikes. It takes you through the heart of Hyalite Canyon, under towering peaks, and past nearly a dozen water falls, ending up in the bowl where Hyalite Lake sits.
This hike can be done year-round, though in winter snowshoes or skis are needed once you get further into the canyon.
Getting Started
The parking lot at the end of Hyalite Canyon Road is large, but you will often see it overflowed, with cars parked along the road.
Taking Children
This hike can be as long or as short as you want, making it an ideal place to run with kids. Grotto Falls (clearly marked with a sign-post about 1 mile in) is great for summertime splashing.
