Mount Ireland via Forest Service Road 130
Overview
This is a difficult out-and-back trail to Mount Ireland in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.
Follow the old decommissioned road into the forest, then watch for an unsigned junction where you will go left. The trail continues through the forest before crossing a dirt road and continuing on the other side. Climb up the mountain on a sometimes rocky trail, then reach a junction in a meadow. Turn left and follow this old road/ATV track as it climbs ever upwards towards the summit. It's a rocky route with little shade.
The road/track turns into a trail then switchbacks up the mountain to reach the summit and the fire lookout that is staffed during fire season. Views stretch in all directions. Baldy Lake is visible below, although there is no trail to get it from up here. Keep an eye out for mountain goats.
Getting Started
The trail starts at a bend in the road where there is parking for 2-3 cars. There is a misleading/incorrect sign here that says the trail is half a mile ahead, but you cannot drive past that sign as the road has been decommissioned.
Taking Children
This is a difficult hike with rocky terrain and a lot of elevation gain.
