Overview

This is a easy out-and-back trail to Lava Butte in the Deschutes National Forest. Hike to the far northeast end of the parking lot and start hiking up Lava Butte Road. The only vehicles you may see here are Forest Service trucks, and in the summer the shuttle that goes up to the summit. Follow the road as it curls up and around the butte. The road ends at a parking area. A short trail on the left heads up to the fire lookout (which is staffed during fire season) and spectacular 360-degree views that include the Three Sisters. If you wish to extend your hike you can follow the trail that goes along the rim of the crater.

Getting Started

Driving north on Highway 97 from La Pine take exit 151 for Cottonwood Road. Driving south from Bend take the exit for the the Lava Lands Visitor Center. Parking for this hike is at the visitor center and is $5 per vehicle, unless you have a Northwest Forest Pass.

Taking Children

This is a good hike for children because you're walking on an even road surface that is not open to public vehicles, and it's not a long hike.
