Lava Butte via National Forest Development Road 9702-100
Overview
This is a easy out-and-back trail to Lava Butte in the Deschutes National Forest. Hike to the far northeast end of the parking lot and start hiking up Lava Butte Road. The only vehicles you may see here are Forest Service trucks, and in the summer the shuttle that goes up to the summit. Follow the road as it curls up and around the butte. The road ends at a parking area. A short trail on the left heads up to the fire lookout (which is staffed during fire season) and spectacular 360-degree views that include the Three Sisters. If you wish to extend your hike you can follow the trail that goes along the rim of the crater.
