Montana Mountain Loop
Trail Length : 35 miles Montana Mountain is a great trail for those new to off-roading and those that are more experienced. It is a great example of what Arizona has to offer and a great trail for those in the Phoenix area wishing to enjoy the day with visitors from out of town. We are extremely lucky to have trails like this right out our “back door.” This trail has some of the best vertical climbs within close proximity to the Valley. While the trail is not technical in nature for the majority of sections care should always be taken. There are a number of shelf sections. The switchbacks on the descent, if heading east, are fun as you lose quite a bit of vertical on the way down. From there the trail is mostly flat and widens out. Last fuel stop from the west is the Shell station in Apache Junction. If for some reason you are low on fuel at the exit on US 60 Superior is a short drive to fuel up or grab a bite to eat. Rogers Trough Trailhead - Optional Hike at a good lunch spot for larger groups. In the near future a few will be added here. Technical rating: (3-4) Easy Rutted and/or rocky road. No shelves but rocks to 9". Water crossings usually less than hub deep. Passable mud. Grades moderate, up to 15 degrees. Side hill moderate up to 15 degrees. 4WD under most conditions. No width problems, vehicle passing spots frequently available if less than two vehicles wide.
