Overview

This is a hard to strenuous out and back hike to Chalk Mountain in Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

This trail goes by Rancho Del Oso Horse Camp, Alder Trail Camp, and Twin Redwoods Trail Camp.

Getting Started

The hike starts from the Big Basin State Park Wadell Beach parking lot, crossing Hwy 1 and walking a short distance past the ranger's house where we take a left turn to the Skyline to the Sea Bypass trail and then left on the West Ridge trail (aka "roller coaster" trail ) all the way up to Chalk Mountain peak. The restroom near the antenna installation looks over the east side of the mountain, while the picnic table looks towards the ocean. Fantastic views on a clear day! Watch out for tics near the picnic table area!

Taking Children

This trail is too strenuous for children, but may be suitable for late teenage kids.
