Metacomet Trail Loop
Overview
This section of the New England Trail begins at the end of an old rail line and climbs in elevation to a gorgeous ridge walk above Plainville, Connecticut. The view from Pinnacle Rock is one not to miss, with gorgeous vistas of the local pond and residential area below and Rattlesnake Mountain to the north.
This hike can be done as an out-and-back, starting and finishing on Route 372, or as a point-to-point, with a car shuttle on Metacomet Rd.
This trail is lightly trafficked, and further crowds can be avoided by hiking on a weekday.
Getting Started
Park across Route 372 in the Randstad Manufacturing & Logistics parking lot, which is completely empty on weekends. Use caution when crossing Route 372, as it is a major state highway with high speed traffic.
If doing the hike as a point-to-point, stage a second car on Metacomet Rd where the brook runs into the pond. There is room for 4-5 cars on the shoulder of Metacomet Rd and a wide gravel road the runs straight to the Metcomet Trail up on the ridge.
Taking Children
This hike is easy enough for most children, though there are a couple ledges that present a falling hazard. Closely supervise children and pets in these areas. Additionally, use caution when crossing Route 372, as it is a major state highway with high speed traffic.
