Overview

This loop hike in Burlington, Connecticut has some of the most challenging and fun tread in the state. About 3.5 miles of this hike can be described as easy terrain, with about 1 mile of strenuous hiking often requiring the use of hands to scramble up and over rocky ledges (aptly named the Mile of Ledges), making for an overall moderate hike. A few of the most difficult sections do have lightly worn routes that bypass the boulders for an easier alternative.

Also on this hike is the historic Tory Den, which British Loyalists were said to have used as a hideout when the Sons of Liberty came looking for deserters. Although part of the den has since collapsed, the location still paints a vivid picture of men huddled in the cave, hiding from both the elements and their pursuers, waiting for the signal that it was safe to return to their wives and homes.

This route is a very popular hike, widely publicized in numerous Connecticut guidebooks, so expect to see numerous other people on trail. Avoid the crowds by doing this hike on a weekday or in the off-season, but be aware that the ledges can be very slippery in wet conditions!

Getting Started

There are no fees for parking or hiking on this section. Continue north on East Plymouth Rd just to the west of Old March Pond until you see a gated gravel road on your right with a Bristol Water Department sign. Just past this gate is a small parking lot with room for 3 cars. There is also parking on the shoulder of East Plymouth Rd for 2-4 more cars a little further down.

Taking Children

The Mile of Ledges section of this hike does require some scrambling including the use of hands. Children under 8 may need some assistance with this portion of the trail. There are also a couple spots on the ledges where a fall hazard is present; children and pets should be closely monitored.
