Today it was very muddy due to last night’s rainfall/storm. I noticed 3 down saplings and 1 bigger tree on the eastern part of this loop. Highs in the high 60’s made this hike comfortable. As a fairly new hiker, I would rate this hike moderate for the exception of several long sections of thick mud that had its way of slowing down momentum as well as the distance factor. For the most part, this outer rim trail is maintained fairly well, ascents and descents were nice, and not many bugs out. One thing I noticed and had to trouble shoot was that the “main trail” on the southern and southeastern part of this loop has sections of heavy overgrowth and as it looked, has been rerouted intertwining with the south trail north from the lean-to. Even so, there are plenty of directional markings and informational signs to tell you where in approximation to and how far you are to the lodge. There are ski trails that are pretty direct shot to the lodge all along this hike just incase if it becomes too much. Overall I liked this hike. I will definitely be back on a drier day. I recommend Waterproof footwear ( I wore waterproof Solomon’s hiking sneakers) and staid dry in today’s soggy ventures. Happy adventuring!

Highland Forest Nature Trail, Fabius, NY, USA
Today was high 60s and overcast. Very Muddy in long sections at low points and where the trail sees the most traffic. Having said that, today wasn’t busy. I saw one hiker and 3 on horseback. The trek is Predominantly through forest. Trail markers are everywhere, even on down trees 😂. South East end of the “main trail” becomes weird. Heavy overgrowth with prickers prevented me from continuing having shorts on, and had to find detours via the south trail. “Not marked on Gaia app” there was a Fair amount of stream crossings. Some of the trail was nicely bordered with beams and gravel, most of the trail was groomed well. Not a difficult descent or ascent but for not having done an 8+ mile loop before, it definitely worked my body over. The lodge has a beautiful view of the valley.
