Boundary Trail #1 to Loowit Viewpoint
Overview
An interesting and scenic hike in the Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument. The lower section of the Boundry Trail completes a loop with the Hummocks Trail, a nature-walk through hills formed by the 1980 eruption. Bring a copy of the Hummocks Trail Guide for more information about the area.
The upper portion of the hike follows a ridge with constant views of Mt St Helens and on the return you'll notice Coldwater Lake to the north. The Boundary Trail is 54 miles long. Turnaround at the Loowit Viewpoint with more 1980 eruption informational signs, continue to the Johnson Ridge Observatory or beyond.
Getting Started
This hike begins at the Hummocks Trailhead in an expansive parking lot. In the summer of 2024, there was a chemical toilet. The Boundry Trail starts at the SW corner.
A national monument pass is not required at this trailhead.

Taking Children
Good hike for kids, especially the Hummocks Loop which is not too long or steep and varied. The trail near Loowit Viewpoint can be narrow and washed out in some years.
