Overview

This easy out and back approx. 4 mile trail follows the Potomac River and is a segment of the Potomac Heritage Trail.

Getting Started

The trail starts/ends in Fairfax County's Riverbend Park and leads to the Great Falls Overlooks in the National Park Service's Great Falls Park. Entrance to Riverbend Park is free and there is ample parking.

Taking Children

This trail is excellent for children of all ages. The trail is hard packed and quite in wide in most places. It would rate 9 out of 10 because there are a couple minor rock scrambles of a few yards that are not difficult, but might add some challenge for toddlers and smaller children. A few interpretative signs along the way help to keep it interesting for kids. Lots of shade, so not bad on a hot day. Not a true hike in the woods, but a nice way to get in a few miles and be rewarded with some good views of the Potomac River Great Falls.
