Overview

This is an easy loop trail to Barbour Pond in Garret Mountain Reservation.

This trail goes by Garret Mountain Equestrian Center.

Getting Started

The hike starts from an unpaved parking area near the north end of the Reservation and goes counter clockwise. You first come to the auto overlook where there is additional parking. It is aptly named because you get a view of Paterson and the surrounding area without leaving your car. The trail connects with the Morris Canal Green Way for a short while and then becomes the White Trail The yellow trail reconnects and brings you down the steepest descent in the park. After you cross the secondary entrance to the park you walk along Barbour's Pond. Fishing is allowed here but swimming is not. At the southern end of Barbour's pond is a Boathouse which you pass on a paved trail before heading back into the woods. You will find a lot of gravel on the trail as you make your way to the primary entrance to the park. After you pass the Equestrian Center you will be walking/hiking on top of the cliffs that Clifton, the rown below was named after. There are numerous spots here where you get a view of the NYC skyline. Continuing north you approach the Lambert Castle Lookout Tower and the trail down to Lambert's Castle is soon after that. Lambert's Castle however, is not part of this hike. Continuing on the Yellow Trail you walk through a grassy meadow and eventually back to the parking area where you started.

More of a walk in the park than an actual hike. Serious hikers will be disappointed but children will be delighted especially with the deer that don't get spooked by humans. I did the hike in sneakers but I would recommend trail runners with a rock plate. Much of the hike is on basalt which can be rough on the feet. Parts of the hike are on gravel paths. There are views of Paterson and Clifton. The hike goes by a lookout tower (closed to the public), a horse stable, a boathouse and Barbour's Pond. I would definitely recommend doing a tick check before leaving the park.

Great for trail running. A bit rocky but not much elevation gain. Lots of deer and lots of people. The park fills up fast on weekends.
