Allenspark Dispersed Camping via Coulson Gulch Trail
Overview
This is a moderate out and back trail in Roosevelt National Forest. This trail is somewhat unique in that it drops down in elevation from the trailhead to the end of the trail (-883 feet) then then the return trip ascends back up to the trailhead. Most of the trail is along a small stream, and crosses the stream about 10 times. During the spring snowmelt, the stream water can be ankle deep but there are rocks to step across in most places. In the dryer months of late summer and fall, the stream might be nearly dry. The majority of the trail is in mixed conifer forest, but a short section opens up into the beautiful meadow of Higgins Park.
This trail goes by Allenspark Dispersed Camping.
Getting Started
There is ample parking for about 20 cars at the trailhead, but much more parking along the road just before the trailhead. The trailhead is just south of the parking areas. The trailhead is well marked with USFS signage.
Taking Children
This would be a good hike for children age 5 on up based on the trail conditions and terrain, but note that the second half of the trip requires ascending back up to the trailhead which will require energy later in the hike. The overall length of the trail could be a challenge for younger children, especially the return to the trailhead. This trail would be rated a 6 for children due to the easy terrain and trail conditions, but trail length and ascending return could be a challenge.
