Clingmans Dome Loop
Overview
This is a moderate loop trail to Clingmans Dome in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As it uses Clingmans Dome Road for the return leg, it is best hiked from December 1 to March 31 when the road is closed to motor vehicles.
This trail goes by Newfound Gap, Indian Gap, Mount Collins, Mount Love, Clingmans Dome Observation Tower, Collins Gap, and Luftee Gap.
Getting Started
From either Cherokee, NC or Gatlinburg, TN take US 441 to Newfound Gap. Park in the large parking lot on the east side, and cross the road to the Appalachian Trail (South).
Taking Children
Due to the length of the hike it is not suitable for children. Teens doing this hike should be capable of hiking 15 miles over moderate terrain.
This is an alternate route for Collins Gap via Clingmans Dome Access Road.
