Middle Sugarloaf via Sugarloaf Trail
Overview
This is a easy out and back trail to Middle Sugarloaf in White Mountain National Forest.
Getting Started
Parking is on the righthand side of Zealand Road about 1 mile from Rte. 302. In the winter, parking is in a lot about 1/2 mile south of Zealand Rd. The road is gated in the winter and there is no parking at the gate. During the summer there is a pit toilet just off the entrance to Zealand Rd. Picnic tables are also available next to the river.
From the parking area, cross the bridge and turn right on the Trestle Trail, which follows the Zealand River. The Sugarloaf trail is less than a quarter mile in, leaving to the left. The trail climbs moderately to a sag between Middle and North Sugarloaf, passing some gigantic boulders along the way. Take a left for Middle Sugarloaf, or a right for North Sugarloaf. Both offer excellent viewpoints. The trail to Middle Sugarloaf is moderate with some fairly level spots until just below the ledges, where there is a ladder (more like stairs) over some steep ledge. Much of the summit is quite open with views in multiple directions. The trail to North Sugarloaf is shorter, with a couple of steeper pitches but generally easy and has two good viewpoints. In the winter there are some sections on both summits which may be icy and require caution.
Taking Children
This is a good hike for children age 5 and up, or younger if they are experienced hikers. Close supervision is necessary on both summits due to the steep drops off the ledges. Children will enjoy exploring the large boulder which has split into two sections, creating a wedge-shaped opening than can be walked through.
