Mugu Peak
Overview
This is a popular hard loop trail to Mugu Peak in Point Mugu State Park within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
Getting Started
There is a dirt parking lot on the Pacific Coast trail at the trail head. Since it is a popular hike the parking lot can get full. There is free parking a little way down on the northbound side. But watch the parking restriction signs carefully.
The initial leg of the hike is up a steep trail of switchbacks. While not dangerous it is strenuous. This initial leg is also common to several hikes to the La Jolla Valley. Once you get to the valley you will make a loop. Use the clockwise direction as shown in the elevation profile. The hike up to the peak at that point is steep and slippery and is therefore safer going up. The loop past the peak is a much gentler trail.
Hiking poles are recommended.
Dogs are not permitted on the trails.
