Hiking over talus is like being out west, we don’t get this much in New England. And it’s a loop, which I prefer over an out and back. And on a hot summer day it’s all in the shade from 4 pm. And the river is right there. And it’s so close to the city but not crowded. I love this hike, I’ve come many times.
Don’t be fooled by the moderate rating, which must relate only to elevation gain and total length. Some of the trail goes over large boulders for 50 meters at a time where a misstep could result in an injury fall. It’s much more adventurous than most “moderate” hikes. To me this makes it fun and interesting but some people I’ve brought have found it quite scary.

Go down to water.. then the Giant Stairs.... and then up again in the end.. I would start North.. you are fresh and will have energy to go down the uneven rock stairs.you will rest at a beautiful waterfall at the bottom... then a short hike to the...The Giant Stairs much longer and challenging than expected... despite all of the signs saying it is going to get a bit rough. Lol.. better have good boots..if your a super human, maybe trail runners. However many were in sneakers as they were not expecting the terrain to be so boulderish and made it through, although they seemed a bit uncomfortable on some of the trail for lack sole support. The last push is a pretty long return up.. it has cut backs and stairs to decrease grade and is a doable but challenging return up.. My Hokas did excellent. Very pretty scenery.. harder than I was planning but well worth it.
