Overview
This is a difficult out and back trail to Makaopuhi Crater in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
This hike is through wilderness area and follows the east rift of Kilauea Volcano. The rift is a weak section which may erupt at anytime. Check usgs/Kilauea.org for current update of the volcano before your hike.
Much of the hike is upon a fairly recent lava eruption (1969-1974). There are sections that hike through an older forest and scenic views of Makaopuhi crater. The eruption partially filled the west side of the crater.
Getting Started
The hike begins from the Mauna Ulu parking lot.
